1788-1869 Hacham Hayyim Palagi Hacham Hayyim Palagi was born in Izmir, Turkey to Hacham Yaakob and Cali Palagi. His Grandfather Hakham Rephael Yoseph, was the Chief Rabbi of Turkey. Following in the footsteps of his great lineage , he became an unparalleled Talmid Hacham of his time. He refused to take a public position so long as his father was living. Later on at around 40 years old , he held the position of Dayan in the Bet Din of Izmir and ran The Bet Yaakob Rabi Yeshivah. He went on to become “Hakham Bashi” of Turkey. He led with great care for his people and maintained an atmosphere of Fear of Hashem and strict adherence to the Torah and Misvot. He wrote over 80 sefarim in his lifetime , but some were lost in a fire. His funeral was very large , accompanied by State officials and Turkish military. He was highly respected and his Teachings have a large impact on world Jewry to this day. י"ז שבט
The Many Tremendous works of Rabbenu A Bereaved Woman The son’s of R’ Haim Palagi once told a story of when their father was officiating in the Bet Din. A woman came barging in with her child. She started crying “ Please help me I have no money to support my son , I give up!” and with that she put the child on the lap of Hacham Haim and ran out. Everyone was shocked and in an uproar! , but the Hacham remained calm without any comments. “Everything is fine , I will raise him.” After a long day starting from before sunrise and ruling on the Bet Din , Rabbenu went home in the afternoon to take a short nap. He sat at the table to eat something quick before he would rest. There was a knock on the door. Rav Haim’s son opened the door to a lady who wished to be blessed by the Hacham. “ Please come in the afternoon , he has to rest ” , said Rav Reuben. She completely understood and left. He closed the door. A few moments later , Hacham Haim was finishing his Beracha Aharona. He asked: “Who was at the door” His son Reuben responded , “ A lady came to receive a blessing and I told her to come back later after the Rabbi’s rest. “What! why! where is she! , responded the uneased R’ Haim. He left the house to run after her and set out to the village. When he found her, he asked for forgiveness and kept apologizing. He blessed her for all she needed and headed back home. As much sefarim as he published , he managed to be deeply involved and concerned with his community members throughout his entire life.
